One of the main questions we get is of course why the Fidesmo iPhone app does not allow the user to connect their payment card to their wearables. The reason for this is very simple: Apple doesn’t allow us to.

While Apple opened up for more advanced NFC interactions in iOS 13, it also put a limit on interactions in the payment interface part of NFC. This means that any attempt to try to interact with payment AIDs (addresses in NFC) is immediately blocked. We’re in discussions with Apple to get the needed access. There is also some movement in the world with regards to this, especially in Europe. Since January 2020 German law mandates that access to payment AIDs should be given to banks and wallet providers. Until then, users can keep using our existing solutions to connect their payment cards:

Through our Android App, or during self-checkout when ordering your wearable.
